The mother (Sarah) and daughter (Ashley) do talk “to” each other in the car - Sarah is reading from a tourism book about the construction of the tunnel. Although a man (the engineer) is referenced, so does that invalidate it?
Later, Madelyne asks Eleanor about her dog, and then asks if she and and her husband ever kids (to which Eleanor responds that they had a son who died).
At the very least, the part about the dog gets the movie to pass.
