The movie passes with flying colors. There are several named female characters (Eep, Ugga, Gran, Sandy, Dawn and Hope. And technically Dawn's sloth, Sash.)
Eep and Dawn subvert the expectation of being rival suitors for Guy because they become instant best friends and never pit themselves against each other. They talk about how they've never met another girl of similar age before, scars, exploring outside the wall, jumping terrain with the family's cat, riding the wolf spiders, family dynamics, dreams, and various other things. They constantly support and encourage each other and defend each other against their families. When Dawn has an idea, Eep tells Ugga, Gran, and Hope to "trust her."
Dawn, in turn, talks with her mom (Hope) about trusting the Crood women during the journey to save the captured men. Dawn encourages her mother to join the sleep pile, compliments her wild hair, asks to have holes drilled into the panic cubby, and voices her wishes to be given more independence and concerns that her parents are smothering her.
Ugga and Hope have several conversations and arguments -- cleaning up, travel basket, directions the group should take while they go on their rescue mission, etc. Hope eventually apologizes to Ugga and Eep, by name, asking them to forgive her "awful" behavior and passive aggression in giving the Croods a travel basket to hint that they should leave. She also then compliments Sandy after previously calling her a "rat baby."
Gran repeatedly talks about her former tribe of women, the Thunder Sisters. All the other female characters talk to each other about Gran's flying hair, Wigasus, commenting on whether or not it will returns. Eventually Gran leads the group as Queen o' Wimmins, dubs all of the rescuers with new Thunder Sister names (Eep = Fire Heart, Ugga = Blood Horn, Sandy = Seeker, Dawn = Sister Sunset, Hope = Bog Water.) Hope asks why she is Bog Water and Gran says she thought of it before Hope had great hair. Hope then says she likes the name.
In smaller interactions, Ugga and Eep talk about firewood. Dawn and Hope talk about the wolf spiders. Hope and Ugga talk about mirrors. Hope and Ugga knock down the wall and say, "It really opens up the place."
