This rating is completely incorrect. There are three women in the scene described above, and they do not speak about a man. Other women in the film include Dr Floyd's daughter (in the phone scene), and the women on the space station, the moon bus, the Pan Am spacecraft, and on the moon base.

@Randy: If I look at the IMDb cast listing I only see one named female character (Elena).

@neil: Maybe you ought to try watching the film instead of just reading about it. Like Randy said, in the second part of the film, 3 female Russian scientists have a discussion before being joined by the protagonist of that particular segment.

@Harris: My point is not that I don't believe there are three women, but that I want to know if they are named. None of the comments other than mine have named any of the female characters.

Hi. I believe the two other women are called Dr. Kalinan and Stretyneva (I just re-watched the movie and read the script), and yes they talk to each other before the protagonist shows up.

The film passes the first test: The are at least two named woman but they don't talk to each other.
The scientists on the station talk to each other, but since that is in Russian and not translated it's clearly not part of the plot.

The three women are named and they do talk to each other about something else besides a man (imdb says they talk about going to the observation deck). But it's really just a very brief introduction to the scene. Considering that the two women are female scientists I would tend to give the movie the benefit of the doubt and say it passes all three tests.

The two other women, though, only make some smalltalk in (unsubtitled, untranslated) Russian before Heywood arrives, and so one could reasonably argue that this doesn't really count for the Bechdel Test.

Watching the movie right now. The Russain scientists, who are introduced by their names, exchange briefly in Russain before Floyd arrives so it does pass just barely.

The two women are wearing Aeroflot uniforms and are clearly only there to promote the Aeroflot brand. This is why they have no relevance to the plot.

Watch the woman on the fire left her hands look at it carefully and if she moves her hands about it's almost as though she's giving hand signals an interest me enough they're familiar hand signals watch that three woman segment again only carefully this time

The scene with three women introduce dr. Freud they sit down and look in the Hilton room and of course that Stanley Kubrick in the Hilton room then look at the woman's hands to the far left she is making Masonic signs with her hands folded it's pretty obvious

Does this movie actually pass?

There aren’t many women and they don’t speak English in the one scene in question. Since I don’t know what they’re saying, I’m not sure if I can count it for or against them. Opinions?

My gut tells me, “no,” but my heart tells me, “maybe...?”

Personally, I don’t believe this passes. I want it to, I love this movie, but it just doesn’t. I’d give it one point.

There are clearly two female scientists talking to each other, but; I feel like just tossing out a one liner of their names is a bit of a cop out.

To all who are saying the conversation between the Russian scientists don't count because they're speaking Russian: the rules don't mention language at all! It doesn't have to be in English to pass.

As best I can tell, it barely passes from this scene. According to this answer scifi.stackexchange.com/posts/125338/revisions the women are talking about going to the observatory once he arrives, then later observing the difficult predicament. So the subject of the conversation is not a man.
