Given the setting/period of the film, the lack of women does make sense - the film is about members of the British Royal Navy in the 1800s.

Yeah, shouldn't they exclude films in which no female characters appear at all? Doesn't seem fair, sort of like bashing Go Fish because it hardly had any men in it.

Pass/Fail of the bechdel test doesn't make something sexist/not-sexist. For example, if I wrote a screenplay with only one character, or without any dialog, it wouldn't pass the bechdel test regardless of content.

Similarly I could have an exremely sexist screenplay where all the women have vapid dialog, but provided it occasionally mentions something other than man (e.g. baking), it passes.

The test isn't about bashing any movie at all, or for that matter, praising any movie at all, so no, there's no reason to give any movie at all a pass, including this one.

I really don't see the logic in the thinking that movies that don't pass the test based on form should be exluded entirely. Not every movie HAS to pass the test. As I see it the point of the test is not to see if an indivual movie "fails" the test or not. As this movie is an example of, there are perefectly fine reasons for a movie not to pass the bechdel test. The results only become interesting when you look at the big picture (and preferebly when you compare it to the overall results of the reveresed bechdel test). The bechdel test is a critisism against the whole movie industry and the representation of females in our culture as a whole. If you exlude movies you get a missleading result when looking at the overall results, and therefor no movie should be excluded.

with no women speaking at all, and only a few pictured, it should be its own category
