A very strong pass. The film revolves around the lives of three complex and very strong women (two working women and their respective daughters) who talk about their own lives and the very successful business they have created.

Beatrice and Delilah (one white one black) become fast, life-long friends and go into business together (as equal partners) and make an enormous amount of money; if anything, it is shown very clearly that they don't have much time for men, and much of the film is spent discussing other matters.

Beatrice's daughter is very light-skinned and tries to "pass" for white, so there is a great deal of discussion about what it means to be an African-American woman in the US of the 1930s.

The men in the film are pretty much a side-show. This is about strong, independent women who control their own lives.
