There are several named female characters: the protagonist Katey, her mother Jeannie, her sister Susie, and one of Katey's schoolmates Eve. Though the women mostly talk to each other about men (Javier or James), there are a couple instances where they don't. One being when Katey comes home late one day and her mother is distressed, wondering if Katey was in danger, and they briefly discuss the rebels. There is no talk of a man in this conversation.
