Strong, smart teen sisters Kielyr and Vespr scale rock walls, hunt with bows and arrows, speak Esperanto to each other as a secret language, and debate the merits of Lolita & Middlemarch. Eight year old Zaja stuns her Aunt Harper by explaining the First Amendment and the Citizen's United decision. Grandma Ellen tries to support the kids after their mom's death. Sexy neighbor Claire and her mom spar over coming on to one of the brothers. Even though the plot highlights the libertarian dad & the oldest brother's efforts at independence, it's exciting to see all these independent & ingenious young women in a beautiful northwest setting.

The funniest moment occurred after the family had shopped at a super market when one of the kids remarked about all of the other customers being so fat. Dad admonished them, "We don't make fun of anybody," to which the youngest girl replied, "Except Christians." The Dad concurred, "Except Chritians." The Denver crowd watching exploded into laughter.

The only conversation between the two girls is in languages nobody can understand, so we don't know what the topic was. The daughters have no personality and are completely interchangeable. The two sons are the ones guiding the action.

It technically passes the Bechdel Test, but the entire framework of the movie, that this family is going to recover their dead mother's body from the clutches of organized religion and her parents, who don't understand her, is happening because the mother has been punted from her father to her husband, with neither of them apparently understanding her but nonetheless deciding what is best for her.
