Smart, strong Chris is a top student in rural Scotland, 1912. Her teacher, Mistress Melon, her mom, Jean, and her friend, Mollie all support her. But her father's violence and abuse of her mom cause tragedy. Stern Aunt Janet tries to help, but war and isolation punish Chris harshly. Beautiful scenery, nice music, and a lot of domestic violence in sobering film.
