Diouana, a brave young woman leaves Senegal to work as housekeeper for a white family in France. She explains to her mother that she must go overseas to make money. But Madame, her employer, though decent at the beginning, harasses the lonely, rebellious Diouanna, till the shocking finale. Often beautiful to look at, with fine West African music, this is the lst film made by a sub-Saharan African director.
