Bechdel Test Movie List

There are multiple female characters in the film, but the two most prominent (Gogo and Honey Lemon), while they are commonly seen together, speak primarily to the males. There is one time where HL tells Gogo to compliment Hiro, but not only is that about a man, Gogo responds to him instead of her. Also, at Tadashi's funeral, you can see that Gogo and Honey Lemon are conversing, but you can't hear what they're talking about (even though since it's a funeral, they're obviously talking about Tadashi).

Honey Lemon and GoGo Tamago exchange brief dialogue in a fight scene. When the two women are working together against the antagonist, GoGo shouts "Get the mask!" and Honey responds either "Got it!" or "I'm on it!" (it was hard to tell over the sound affects) They are also seen conversing in the background in several different scenes, (sometimes with Aunt Cass as well) though you can't tell what they are saying. Towards the end, an unnamed female nurse is also talking with Abigail Callaghan towards the end about her medical condition while escorting her to an ambulance.

There is a scene where Wasabi demands they come up with a plan to apprehend the villian. Gogo says she's going or the mask, before taking off Honey Lemon replies with:"Right behind you!" and follows after her.

GoGo: Get the mask.

Honey Lemon: I’m right behind you!

It should be noted that along with getting a bechdel pass, this movie featured two women of color (gogo is asain, honey lemon is hispanic) who are in STEM fields.

They both have different body types and personalities with gogo being a short and stocky tomboy and honey lemon a tall, gangly fashionista(a rare combo). They are both shown to be experts in their fields and are treated as equals by their male companions (hiro never does the cheap "gurls can do science???" or shames either for the way they present themselves, he reacts with as much awe and respect as he does with wasabi and models their [non-sexualized!!!] supersuits to reflect their individual personalities). They do have major roles in the story as well (gogo evades the villian by taking charge in a car chase, and also catches the villian off guard several times and honey is observant and notices things the others don't and also manages to stop a rampaging robot while the others were struggling to). Oh yeah, and they kick MAJOR ass

Theres also Aunt Cass who, aside from being hilarious, is a single woman who raises two nephews and runs a successful business on her own.


Overall, this movie represents women in refreshingly great way and also manages the rare feat of making none of them love interests. Definitely a must-see.

All of the examples listed in these comments are referring to the main villain, who is demonstrably male. The paramedic who assists Abigail at the end is not named. While I agree with much of Big Hero Fan's assessment of the film's presentation, I can't in good conscience agree with this film getting 3/3.

Though there are more than two females who are named, and they do throw comments at each other, they never have a full conversation, let alone one that is not about a male.

I loved this movie and I recommend it to everyone I can, but I can say confidently that this does not pass the Bechdel test. There were only two lines passed between them (Gogo and Honey). Rest assured though that I believe this movie covered some amazing representation in racial and gender diversity. I just don't think it passed.

I don't think "Get the mask" counts as not being about a man, it's part of a bigger conversation about/between the mask-wearer and the mask-wearers male enemy (who's an ally of GoGo and Honey).

I'm a big proponent of having a reeeeeally lax application of what counts "Two named women talking about something other than a man" [because that shows how ridiculous it is that so few movies can muster even that] so this is rare for me, that I disagree in the other direction.

Even if it's only two lines, that would be fine. It's not about the quantity.

But in this case they're talking about a man and their interaction with him (in the form of his mask, that he is currently wearing).

This is a great movie, and I'm glad that I brought my daughter to it.

But the idea that "Get [that man's] mask!" constitutes a conversation that is not about a man? Come on!

Unless there is another actual conversation happening between 2 women, this is really stretching the idea of "conversation".

Does this movie future a lot of great women and diversity ? Yes. Is that relevant at all to the test ? No. The test isn't about something being feminist or progressive (heck, 50 Shades passed the test), but just about a specific set of questions.

This deserves a 2/3 rating, but not a full pass IMO.

The above-mentioned discussion takes at most 5 seconds. In order to pass the Bechdel test the conversation has to be close to 30 seconds. 'Big Hero 6' does NOT pass the test.

I have to concur, the dialogue was about a man and does NOT constitute a conversation.

Join in the dissent. ;-) One brief exchange of words doesn't count as a conversation, and even if it did, it's about a man.

I can talk with someone about a person's tie, and I'm not talking about the person, I'm talking about the tie. So the same goes for a mask, right?

I think that even though that yes this movie doesn't not pass the bechdeltest it is still a great movie to see and does a great job breaking stereotypes and gender roles. So also as a side note, there was very few actual conversations in the movie from anybody that weren't either group discussions, a robot and human(s) discussions, monologues, simple instructions, or not talking about the main character from either gender. The exceptions to this I remember are Tadashi & Hiro, and Aunt Cass and Hiro.

There almost needs to be a secondary recommended list, where when a video passes the test but is still not great or when it doesn't pass but should be recommended. But that would be a different test/opinion.

July, they're saying "get the mask" because they're talking about how to interact with / defeat the guy in the mask.

With the tie example, if we say "Hey, I like the tie that guy's wearing, I wonder where you could get colors like that", that would be different from "How should we deal with this guy? I know, let's take his tie!"

They exist only in relation to the men in the movie, which makes the movie fail the test.
