I guess it passes but the conversation isn't actually relevant to the movie. It adds colour to the story, paints a little background as to where this minor character is from, but the movie wouldn't be lacking without it. It's a token, or at worse, an excuse for girl on girl.

There are 2 conversations between Heffina and Maureen in the film. In the first one Maureen says Heffina is forcing everyone to agree with her and in the second Heffina accuses Maureen of telling the newspaper.
