The two main characters are fast friends who form a bond (considered too close by their parents) as they dream up an imaginary world. There are some references to men in the stories they create, and a tiny sub-plot involving one character's first sexual experience with a young man, and an even tinier sub-plot about a Mario Lanza obsession, but most of the movie's dialogue is about the girls and their experiences outside of men/romance.

A very Bechdel/Mo test worthy film indeed. Males are not of any large importance during the major part of the film. A concerned and disagreeing mother is.

The primary mechanism of the plot in this film is the relationship between two young women. These girls are beautifully played by Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynsky, who never shy away from the fact that the characters they play are complex, confused people trying to figure out what they want from life. Much of the film is comprised of scenes of these two characters, particularly scenes in their imaginary land where they are queens. While they do sometimes talk about men, they are much more interested in each other and their own ideas than in what any male characters think of them.

An exploration of a heartbreaking, troubling and ultimately tragic relationship between two teenage girls. When men are mentioned, they tend to be characters in the girls' collaborative fantasy fiction or film actors--in other words, the mere idea of men, which the girls shape and alter in accordance to their own wishes. The power and danger of youthful imagination is central to almost all their conversations, no matter what the actual subject may be.
