The central character is female, and she - like all the other female characters - are complex and anything but cliched. Most of the female to female conversations occur around the Mahjong table. Nonetheless, almost all dialogue in this film is serious, non-degrading and the work of a perfectionist.
IMHO this is Ang Lee's second best film - there's a reason it won the Golden Lion at Venice - and is a must see for anyone interested in his work. It is however extremely adult - make sure your kids are sound asleep!
