Aspects of this plot are definitely pretty problematic, but it passes the test nonetheless and manages some surprising emotional depth in its subplots (about family, growing up, and college/future aspirations).

Ha, that sounds so sweet! In the classroom scene, Laney barely speaks, but Misty and another girl tell Laney she should kill herself because then her artwork will increase in value. At the party, Laney finds Misty sick in the bathroom and Misty asks Laney how it feels to know that rich Misty got an art scholarship.
