Named female characters: Tris, Christina, Natalie Prior, Jeanine Matthews, Tori, and Molly, whose name appears on the scoreboard though she is never addressed by it. They talk about things like jumping off trains, divergent testing, throwing knives, and the faction system.

This film shows women in a variety roles, both positive and negative. It shows women can be Brave, strong, selfish, intelligent, caring, supportive, confident, scared, often within the same character, and sometimes at the same time.
For me the story hinged on the relationship between Tris and Christina, and Tris and Natalie.

A soft action movie, where the only threat is your typical dystopian minefield, and where the protagonist is uninteresting and seems to get rescued an awful lot. She starts to take into her own character after realizing that getting emotional about stuff gets you dead.

Tris: "The test was supposed to tell me what to do."
Tori: "The test didn't work on you."
A funny metacomment on the whole test thing!

Plenty of good female characters talking about a variety of things. Movie doesn't compare to the book but this aspect holds up well.

While I agree that this film does pass the test, most of the female characters lack substance and character development. The film is hardly revolutionary, as it is another "colour-by-numbers" story, following a strict formula. There is hardly any creative integrity in the film nor the novel, as it borrows multiple ideas from other works. As Iee said, the only real threat is a typical dystopian minefield. Overall, when I first saw it in theatres, I enjoyed it, but now I have seen it from a different perspective and believe it is very flawed.
