The movie I chose to test is called End of Watch. This movie was released in 2012 and is about two police officers, both male, named Officer Taylor and Officer Zavala. They patrol the streets of South Central Los Angels, which is an area ruled by gangs and filled with drug violence.

While it may not seem likely at first, the movie does indeed pass the Bechdel test. The first scene where we see women in the movie is around the 5min 20sec. mark. In this scene all the police officers are gathered in the same room and are receiving their assignments. Although the women do not talk to each other in this scene they are given names, which are Officer Orozco and Officer Davis.

The first conversation appears around 8min 24sec. when Officer Orozco is giving orders to a new officer named “Blue” (kind of hard to tell the name but I’m pretty sure that’s her name). Here’s the conversation:

Orozco: “DLC 13 check on the roof”

Blue: “Thank you mam”

Orozco: “Faster blue lets go!”

The next part in the movie where there is a clear conversation between two women about something besides a man is around 31min. In this scene Officer Taylor and his girlfriend Janet are attending the quinceanera of Officer Zavala’s family members. Here Janet strikes up a conversation Officer Zavala’s wife, Gabby about her soon to be born baby.

Janet: “Can I feel it?”

Gabby: “Yeah, no he’s actually kicking a lot right now. Here, you feel it. “

Janet: “Wow, oh my gosh! How long have you known Brian?”

Gabby: “3 years. He and Mike went to the academy together.”

The last time Gabby and Janet talk to each other is once when Gabby is in the hospital and just had her baby (56:30) and the other time is at the wedding of Janet and Brian (108:30). Here, Gabby is telling Janet how simple marriage is and some guidelines to follow.

Gabby: “You’ll learn this. Marriage is really basic. There are just a couple guidelines. One, you’ve got to give it up all the time. Two, be a freak and try new things.”

Janet: “Like what?”

Gabby: “The gouch, the texas twister…”

Janet: “No, no, no! That’s something made up. The internet made that up.”
