I think most people ignore this movie and look at it as a trite reinforcement of gender roles, but it's unexpectedly progressive if you give it a chance. It does feature two women talking to each other about a topic other than a man, specifically Sharpay and Kelsi's discussion of how the composition should be performed, but I believe there may be a few other instances as well. Beyond that, the female characters are equally important to the plot as the male ones, and in almost all instances rely on their intellectual, musical, or political ability to achieve their goals. If anyone is lumped into a stereotypical role it's Troy Bolton and his basketball team, though it's clear a large part of it is tongue in cheek. Sure, the movie is beyond easy to mock, but beneath the cheesiness, it's not all bad.
