This is a relationship drama about an extended family with about a dozen members but the core of the family is a mother, her three adult daughters, and her sister. While a lot of their conversations revolve around the men in their lives, the daughters have a couple of significant conversations about their relationships with each other, and with their mother. At one point, the mother also talks to them about her relationship with her own mother.

Stellar performances, Streep and Roberts were riveting and so happy to see quality men unafraid and humble enough to let this movie shine for what it is!! An authentic real life film.

This movie may pass the test, but is full of the most pathetic people. I didn't see even one admirable woman in this movie. In fact, the only characters with any moral compass are played by men (Chris Cooper & Benedict Cumberbatch). Terrible movie, and terrible female role models.

Nichole - I think you misunderstand the idea of the test -- it's not a test of whether the female characters are "likable." It is an objective question, not a subjective one. The point is purely about whether or not women are represented as solely reflecting male agency -- or whether they might have something they can say on their own.
