While there is only one female in the entire movie (Nicole Bonnet played by Audrey Hepburn), she is the films main character and is a rather complex character for her time. She is driven by protecting her family to steal a sculpture from a museum, although she receives help from Simon (Peter O'Toole) in the heist, she is the brains behind the entire operation. She does fall in love with SImon but that is a sub plot, not the main caveat for the film and their romance is driven by both characters witty lines, it's not like Nicole is some waif-ish character waiting to be whisked away by a man. I do wish that there would have been additional female characters involved in the heist just to add that dimension, but I think for a film of its time the female character is rather strong.
