This movie has one character, a man, and he does not interact with anyone. It fails the test by its very nature.

I think it is a mistake to attempt to apply this sort of test to movies with one character. Or movies without dialog. The rating system itself fails.

The fact that the test is not a useful tool for judging the film does not invalidate the rating. It does not pass. There was not way it ever would while maintaining its artistic vision.
An individual film should not be judged solely on passing or failing the test. Some stories worth telling just aren't going to pass. Ideally, it there would be a bell curve centered on movies that pass with equal amounts that don't pass the Bechdel and reverse Bechdel tests on both sides. But the point is to take the production of the movie industry where that bell curve is shifted strongly to those that fail the Bechdel.

Would the movie have been fundamentally changed if its sole character had been a woman? No, not really.
But even if Redford's character had been a woman, it still would fail because she would be the only female character. The test doesn't really apply to a film like this.

The test is about judging overall movie industry output on gender bias. It is a big deal that so many movies fail the test. Not this one man survival story.
It is obviously can't be applicable to every movie. Gravity similarly fails the test.
I'm not sure I can be too hard on a movie for failing unless it has 3 or 4 people in it.

David disagreed with the rating and said:
I am a physician and scientist and found the "Bechdel test" to be the most laughable nonsense. The Bechdel "test" is simply more feminist gender-bender dreck aimed at degrading men. Men have, throughout history and to the present, made the vast majority of major scientific, artistic, and humanitarian contributions to human kind. Women's contributions are most certainly significant and most welcome .but spare me the propaganda. The cream rises to the top.

@David: to be fair, men didn't let women read or go to secondary schooling and shit back in the day... so it's not really their fault that they weren't making scientific discoveries

There is no dialogue in this movie. How could you apply this "test" here?

This movie is the poster child for a third (or fifth?) rating status: inapplicable. The movie's structure makes it impossible.
Arguably, "inapplicable" could also apply to movies whose structure guarantees a pass, such as "Spice World". Removing those "fish in a barrel" easy wins would make a better illustration of the underlying issue.
