The film involves an all-male group of hijackers attacking a ship with an all-male crew, so there are barely any speaking parts for women in the film. Captain Phillips (Tom Hanks' character) talks to his wife for a few minutes at the beginning, and there's a female medic with a few lines at the end, and maybe an unnamed Navy operative with a technical line or two, but none of these characters are ever in the same scene, let alone speaking to each other.

A technically accurate rating, but I question the validity of the use of the Bechdel Test on a movie based this closely on a true story. We should be seeking to ensure proper representation of women in film, yes, but I wonder about faulting a director who features no women characters in a story about four male hijackers that took over a ship with a crew of twenty men.

The test is best applied when looking at overall movie trends. It can often be meaningless when looking at a single film, such as this one which failed for obvious reasons that have nothing to do with gender bias.

This is a Lawrence of Arabia- type film- no women had major parts in the historical story- and adding a female would be inaccurate or even silly (a female warrior in Lawrence, for example)

The only accusation of misogyny might be why all-male topics are made into movies versus few female type- films.
