Cherie (the protagonist) and her friend Vera discuss Cherie's plans for her future which involve going to Hollywood. Cherie takes exception to being called a 'hillbilly' and Vera points out that she (Cherie) is from the Ozarks after all. Cherie discusses her childhood, her town becoming flooded, her entry into a talent competition, etc. The two women's discussion gives the character back-story and Cherie's ambitions in life.
