This movie is frustratingly difficult to rate. I think there are only two female characters who are named: Armitage, the heroine, and her daughter, Yoko. I say "I think" because there is a third named character, named Julian, who is the ghost of a robot. But this character's gender is very ambiguous. The clothes they appear in are on the masculine side and conceal their figure, yet their hair is feminine. The name is masculine, but their voice is very feminine.. not as in little boy feminine, but as in the voice actor was obviously a grown woman. Their facial features are also androgynous, often times very feminine. Then again, it is anime.. who knows?

If you count Julian as a female character, the movie scrapes by because there is a somewhat lengthy scene between Julian and Armitage that could count. But considering the way other female characters are represented (hyper feminine), I sincerely doubt the writers intended Julian to be female: at best, I would say a-gendered. As far as dialogue between obviously gendered women goes, there are multiple scenes in which one female character will say something to the other, but the other doesn't respond back: for example, Yoko cries out for her mother to stop fighting because Armitage is dangerously close to dying... but armitage doesn't say anything back. There is only one other scene that potentially passes this movie: at the end, there is a mother/daughter scene where they say a couple of lines about a ring. However, this scene lasts less than 30 seconds. Unfortunately, movies with <30 second technicalities do not count, (especially when there are multiple length conversations between men in the same film), unless they are counted to foil the purpose of this test, which is to measure the frequency of women's representation in film.
