Margo and Edith have a very brief conversation at the mall fountain about coins. I guess there's also the introduction of Lucy to the three daughters.

Then again, this is the movie that thinks date rape is funny, that Gru can't date someone who isn't physically perfect, and marriage is the happiest ending for the female protagonist.

Date rape is funny? Do you mean that scene in which Lucy shot tranquilizers at Gru's date? Because it was very clear that was done to prevent her from embarrassing Gru by ripping off his wig. I don't think the vibe of the scene was "it's okay to drug women to get what you want from them".
I also don't think Gru's objections to his potential dates was that they were ugly. One was clumsy (knocking over tables at Agnes' party) and the other one was rude and shallow.
My problem with this film is how Lucy Wilde seemed to get dumber as the movie went on. First she captured Gru in an awesome way and...that's all she did?

I too was disgusted by the scene where Gru carries the "bimbo" date out of the restaurant, treating her like a sack. As if it's OK to mistreat someone because they're annoying you or about to humiliate you. Let alone that it's a woman.
Many children in the theatre laughed at the scene, and I was horrified.

My major complaint against the movie was the 180-degree shift it took in attitude compared to the first movie when it came to family. The first movie was about having a family that maybe wasn't so normal and that that was okay, but then the second movie turned it around and said that they weren't a complete family after all and needed to be more normal to be okay.

I, too, hated the scene where the blonde woman was thrown around after her and Gru's date. A group of boys next to me were laughing, and it made me very uncomfortable. No one should have violence towards them made comical.

You ladies need to lighten up! Seriously you read way too much into the movie. Gru's shallow, drunk date showed that no man wants to be seen with a shallow, self-absorbed drunk. He sent her home in a cab, the only way to get her out of the restaurant was to carry her. 2. I didn't see anything about having a perfect family there. I saw a lonely single dad who realized he was missing an adult companion. Sheesh, take an anti-depressant and unwind girls!

I agree that Lucy started out portrayed as a smart, competant agent, and gradually got dumber as the movie progressed. Was it a coincidence that this dumbing down occurred as she and Gru became attracted to each other? If not, shame on the script-writers!

I was not actually bothered by the movie ending with Gru's unconventional family becoming "more traditional." First of all, Gru's home, with his adopted girls, minion "cousins" and secret agent of a wife, is hardly traditional. Secondly, it is perfectly natural for a single father to desire a romantic companion or for a child to want a parent of her own gender. I think the movie portrayed AGNES wanting a mother; that is not the same thing as sending the message that ALL kids NEED a mother. If I see a movie in which a child desires a horse, I don't go home thinking that all kids need horses.

The "happily ever after wedding" is a clichéd movie ending, I give you... But then again, the movie tended to focus more on how that marriage would give Agnes and Gru what they wanted, not Lucy. I don't think you can make the case that the movie portrayed Lucy as an incomplete woman who only needed marriage to fulfill her.

@Alice, you haven't seen Looney Tunes, have you? All comedy, in one way or another, plays off someone's misery

What bothered me most about the film is that we are, at the start of the film, introduced to a brave and capable female protagonist who gets the drop on Gru proving she's his superior, and yet somehow at the end of the film she's strapped to a rocket and he has to save her.

Yeesh.

Obviously, this movie is all about old school antics and villainy. EVERYTHING was over the top: the enormous secret lab; the secret gadgets; the silly stereotypical villains; the indestructible people; the themed villains; the funny accents. It's old-school antics for a new school audience.

Lighten up! This movie wasn't made for you. It was made for kids. Looney Toons and Tom and Jerry was worse than this in terms of violence.

Goodness.

The point of the 1srt movie wasnt about "its okay to have an unconventional family."
It was "it's okay to have a family, there is good in you even if you don't think so at first." it was about attachment and love to his daughters. loyalty. And showed in a caricatural way because it's funny. 2nd degree of humour is funny. absurd is funny.
This second film is about love, about a monoparental dad who feels a bit lonely, who want to give to his girls the mom they want.
Again, about the date with the "bimbo". I think it was more about fitting personalities.

There is so much cynic and angry people here who can't appreciate the magic, the romance, the absurd.

When you watch a movie, try to think as the protagonist. You know? empathy?
