Smilla is the protagonist, and has significant interactions with three women: Juliane, the mother of the dead child Isaiah; Elsa Lubing, the former financial officer for the antagonist's company; and Benja, the younger woman who is Smilla's stepmother. Isaiah is the primary driver of the entire storyline, so both Juliane and Elsa speak with her about him, but also about related matters such as Juliane's alcoholism and Elsa's spiritual fears for Smilla. With Benja, the fulcrum is their shared relationship with Smilla's father, but they have significant personal differences. I feel it does just barely match although it is not nearly as feminist as it thinks it is and most of the other main characters are men.
