Jane is quite autonomous in her refusal to give information to the police who are both threatening her and bribing her for the information. Similarly, Valerie also behaves of her own accord in witholding significant information from the police.

If what you are saying is meant as a critique you should realise every character is an instrumental object for the male protagonist and this is clearly illustrated throughout the film.
