Mt Zion is set in a potato picking township (Pukekohe) in New Zealand in 1979. Turei (Stan Walker) and his band, Small Axe, are vying for the opportunity to be the opening act for Bob Marley and The Wailers. A coming of age movie, there are four named female characters: Ma, Layla, Manawa and Anahera, who serve to advance the storyline centered on Turei. There is no scene where any of these women talk to each other.
