Bechdel Test Movie List

The four main women in this movie talk to each other about many things, including men, but my favorite is when the comic super-nova known as Rebel Wilson talks about Kirsten Dunst's stint as a teenage bulimic.

this movie is AWESOME. It has been compared to Bridesmaids, but it is much less male-focused, deals more with characters' inner conflicts (which are not simply OMG NO1 LUVS ME,) and is far more realistic. These girls are FUCKED UP. This film is groundbreaking in portraying women who are in a phase of their lives where they are a bit lost and uncertain, and depicts their "unladylike" ways of coping, while revealing their vulnerability. These bitches are fucked up and gross, but they have souls.

It did a great job of showing the four main characters as women with real concerns who talk to each other all the time. They were total bitches and mean to each other which was unpleasant but funny at times.

Then again, the main source of their competition was over who got married first (patriarchy - men don't argue over who gets married first, why should anyone), and that the 1st one to get married was ugly/fat by patriarchal standards. So basically the movie was how each measured up to patriarchy.

Even teenage bulimia is a way to get thin to look good for boys..and there was a part about abortion..and repairing the wedding dress... so it's pretty much man-centred, but I guess it passes the test. The movie was basically about coping with being grown up, just that a lot of adult tasks were seen as centred about marriage. (contrast that to a male movie, where the adult tasks would be being a hero, earning money, being moral, getting a girl, etc)

I feel like this movie was just trying to be honest about the less pleasant and competitive side of friendship and growing up.

You really can't fault the movie for bringing marriage and relationships into the fold there. As a guy. I'm can tell you with complete certainty that there are 30 something men out there that would react the same way if their shy cubby unlucky in love friend married before them.
