The characters may speak to Kayako, but she does not respond in any way other than making groans and creaks before killing them.
The same can be said of Emma, since she suffers from dementia and is largely silent. Yoko speaks to Emma, who merely gestures or is unresponsive, Susan does the same, as does Jennifer. Only when Karen speaks to Emma does Emma respond, saying that she just wants "her" (Kayako) to leave her alone.
It counts, and there is a large cast of named female characters, though the majority of real communication happens between male and female characters, or male characters.
