Nan Barlow is a college student who visits Whitewood, Massachusetts to do research on witches. She speaks to Mrs. Newless, the inn keeper, who is really a witch and main villain named Elizabeth Selwyn. They talk about witches. Nan then goes to the local book/antique store and talks to Patricia Russell, the shopkeeper, about witches. Later, Patricia talks to Mrs. Newless about Nan. Both Nan and Patricia encounter a mute servant girl named Lottie. Although Lottie can't talk, she interacts with Nan and Patricia.
Bonus: Patricia's car won't start when she's trying to get her blind father out of town. She doesn't hesitate to pop the hood and look under it to see what's wrong. She doesn't ask for or get any help from men.
