Two female fast food restaurant workers (Sonmi-451 portrayed by Doona Bae and Yoona-939 by Xun Zhou) speak to each other about several topics including their work, work conditions and other female workers. When they explore a forbidden area of their environment they exchange dialogue about this area.

Sadly though, a man appears in the old "movie" they are watching....and even more sad is Somni 451 is dependent on a man to save her. So many female characters are left in the background in this mainly male dominated movie. Several missed chances considering Halle Berry is a key player in the movie. Just my opinion.

JeffK, Sonmi is the key heroine and courageous figure who wards off barbarism for a spell. In a review looking at the food themes here, I wrote "One of the story’s stars is a slave in a fast-food chain far in the future. I don’t want to give away the exciting developments in this post, but let’s just say it wouldn’t be much of an action-adventure film if she just put up with the humiliations and keeps serving McWhoppers."

Other strong female characters include Luisa Rey, who talks about corporate intrigue with Fay Li, and Meronym, who gathers wisdom from all the villagers and leads a brave expedition.

I've just learned of this rating system, so I don't have my examples in detail, but both the book and the film portray women as being fully human and interesting.

Though the film does feature women the criticisms from people of colour regarding the use of "yellow face" rather than hiring an asian actor and the trope of asian people as automated interchangeable beings have been ignored. Very disappointing for a film with potential.

Sonmi-451 may have been rescued by a man but she then delivers an exposing and scathing speech which changes the future of Earth and lends massive perspective on the following story-lines and human nature itself. If that isn't a monumental win for feminists I really don't know what is.

Strong female characters include Sonmi 451 and Luisa Rey, so overall very female positive.
I don't remember any meaningful female-female conversations, which many films seem to lack, but overall still recommended.

I watched it again last night and was particularly paying attention to any women being rescued by men or minorities being rescued by white people. In both cases the rescuer and rescued change places more than once.
-Sonmi is rescued and educated by a man, then the two of them sacrifice themselves so that Sonmi's philosophy can save the world.
-Meronym and Zachry rescue each other CONSTANTLY. It's back and forth so much that it's kind of hard to keep track of which one rescues the other more, especially if you consider Meronym rescuing Zachry's niece, Zachry helping Meronym to find the information she needs to save her people, and finally Meronym and her people giving Zachry and her niece a better life.

The rating is fine but you should note that in the original novel Sonmi is not rescued by a man - instead, the man who "rescues" her is actually a government agent who pretends to rescue her but instead sets her up as part of a complex scam to discredit the revolution. There is therefore no real romance either. She knows about the deception, but goes along, deliberately sacrificing herself in order to get her message out - thereby taking control if the situation much more strongly and independently than her character does in the film (which I nonetheless enjoyed). By comparison with the book the Sonmi story in the film represents a substitution of a male-oriented Hollywood cliche for the author's intent - though Sonmi remains a strong character, due mostly I think to Doona Bae's performance.
