Eight female characters--all named--all spend a lot of time talking to each other (in person and over the phone). Besides romance and men, they discuss the New Deal, World War II, publishing, the depression and dashed economic hopes.

Definitely passes the test. I wish the movie was as good as the novel--Mary McCarthy at her critical best. The book was passed around clandestinely by young women trying to learn about sex and life, and was criticized for revealing too much about the "secret" lives of women. Hah!
