Notably, Mei and Satsuki talk to each other throughout this anime.

They often talk about Totoro (mentioned as a "he" in the English translation) and the Catbus (unknown sex) but even more about their hospitalised mother.

Very much a female-centered film. There are only a few male characters in the entire thing, and they barely ever interact with each other (if at all). The plot is driven by the women and girls, as it is in most of Miyazaki's movies.

I'm going to have to agree with Mitchell...it's somewhat ironic, but the gender flip of the test almost applies to Totoro. The only time that I can think of a male character definitively speaking to another male character is--and this is really stretching it--when Tetsuo (father) thanks Totoro for keeping Mei safe. But even then, Tetsuo is speaking to a forest spirit that he does not know is present.
