This really depressing film is a very clear pass as it centres on the lives of poor Irish women incarcerated in convents for such ‘crimes’ as having a child out of wedlock, being the victim of rape, being considered ‘fast’, being overly attractive, having grown up orphaned and poor, and any combination of the above.
Many conversations between these women take place, usually about their predicament as well as between them and their gaolers (nuns) about their moral failings.
This would be one example where a clear reverse Bechdel Test might be called for, ie, an open dialogue between the exclusively male hierarchy of the Catholic church explaining how they believe they are implementing a moral policy towards the women living within this theocracy.
