There's FOUR women with significant roles in this gangster flick, and two of them have a relationship with each other in an accepted, normalized in the movie kind of way! One is a military commander, and SHE wins in a bit of hand to hand combat with one of the bad guys. This is the first film to be made in Kinshasa by a Congolese crew - fab.u.lous.
This film is also notable in the gangster genre because 1. no rapes (there are beatings) 2. a woman's lover goes down on her and they show her ecstatic face AND the film kept it's R rating in the USA. The makers of Boys Don't Cry and just about any other film where a woman has sexual pleasure have had a big NC-17/X rating fight over this particular act even when no pussy is on screen. Somehow Viva Riva! slipped through...
