Enola, the little girl, and Helen, the mother figure, are both female. I am pretty sure they talk to each other, even, but it has been awhile since I've watched the movie.

Helen and Enola are both female and both named within the movie ("I told Helen...", "Enola, do as he says...") so it certainly passes the first test. And when they are eating the fish they exchange a couple of words about the mariner's feet, so it arguably *scrapes* through the second test too.

I'm not sure about talking and topic, but it's impossible this movie does not pass the first part of the test. Two people have already comment that (third if you count my comment) and still appears the 0/3 in the test. I mean, there's no way one can doubt about to named female characters in the movie.

As said above: two named female characters, Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and Enola (Tina Majorino). That's a 1/3.

Helen talks to Enola several times, and most of the them, Enola doesn't talk back. But there's the scene when they are escaping from the atoll, when Enola says something like "right" back to Helen. I don't remember the exact conversation now, but it happens. It's a technicality, but even that it's a 3/3 pass.

This needs to be at least 2/3. There are 2 named female characters who talk to each other.
