Bechdel Test Movie List

Along with some of the cheesiest lines ever, this film has only two female characters (not including the two un-named girls who are ignored except for a few shots of them screaming) and not a word passes between them.

while i don't technically disagree with the rating, this movie doesn't pass the test, i think that this movie is a prime example of a major flaw in the test. the two female characters, especially the tech sgt, were just as fleshed out character wise as any of the males, and they both had plenty of (relatively) engaging conversations throughout the movie,none of which were about men. so why should the movie be labeled as anti feminist just cuz they never talked to each other.

It's not, it just doesn't pass the test

Again, the point of the test is to demonstrate a trend holistically, it says only a little about an individual movie on its own.

The test is not the be all and end all either. It's a way of making people THINK about media representations and treatment of women. Applying it to hollywood blockbusters shows us that, GENERALLY, Hollywood has little regard for women. As the previous commenter noted, the test talks about movies en masse more than movies individually.

Plus, it makes great trollbait.

Keeping the girls separate maintains a "Smurfette" scenario too. It may be justified by the plot, but the fact that there's no situation where more than one girl is present means they're also under-represented.

Battle: LA is the type of movie where women should be under-represented. It's a movie about a Marine infantry company, which is an organization that has no women, which is part of an organization that has few women in it.

The entire movie is about small unit infantry tactics (and about how screwed that SSG got on promotions. E-6 in 20? What the heck?).

Battle: LA, as stated above, is the type of movie the Bechdel Test has no relevance to.

Programjunkie - I want to see the Bechdel Test applied because I want to watch movies with well rounded female characters in it. You're probably right about the subject matter not leading to lots of women in the movie but that is not the point. And are people being a little defensive here ? The test doesn't say it's a bad movie or an anti-feminist or anti-woman movie. It simple says the movie doesn't pass the Bechdel Test and so the rating has relevance to me because I want to watch movies with strong female characters.

@Rose Matthews: That's the point though, Rose. Battle: Los Angeles DOES have strong, well-rounded female characters in it, especially Elena Santos. It simply fails the Bechdel Test because of the very nature of the movie--it would have been even more unrealistic than it already was (we ARE talking aliens, here) if there had been more women in the movie, let alone an equal number of women as men.

I just saw this last night, and I have to disagree - there is a scene in the middle of the movie (I think when they're dissecting the alien?) where Santos and Michele (the veterinarian) exchange a sentence or two.
