The main plot of the story revolves about the platonic relationship and deep friendship between actress Gertrude Lawrence and playwright/composer Noël Coward, but there are several conversations between Gertrude and other female characters that have names including her daughter Pamela. These conversations are not just about men, in fact, most are about the protagonist herself.
While not a necessarily a feminist movie, the main relationship between the leading female and male characters being a platonic friendship is a rare thing to see in a movie and not surprisingly, the movie was not a success finically.
