In this Charlie Chaplin comedy, the only substantial female role is the hero's love interest whose name is Merna, according to the dialogue cards (she's played by actress Merna Kennedy), although she is credited as the Circus Proprietor's "Step-Daughter, A Circus Rider" in the opening credits.

One of her unnamed girlfriends encourages her to get her fortune read by an unnamed female fortune teller and, sure enough, "love and marriage with a dark, handsome man" is predicted.
