The entire conversation between the two women:

Pepper: That's Jarvis, he runs the house.
I've got your clothes here, they've been dry cleaned and pressed and there is a car waiting for you outside that will take you anywhere you'd like to go.

Christine: You must be the famous Pepper Potts.

Pepper: Indeed I am.

Christine: After all these years, Tony still has you picking up his dry cleaning.

Pepper: I do anything and everything that Mr. Stark requires, including occasionally taking out the trash. Would that be all?

Scott disagreed with the rating and said:
While their conversation references Tony Stark, the two women are trading insults between each other more than talking about Stark. And the first part of the conversation isn't talking about a man. Although it's a very short exchange, Iron Man does pass all three tests.

I disagree with Scott. He mistakes the form of the conversation for its real content. The two women are not trading insults with each other, they are sparring over their respective "claims" on Tony, without explicitly saying so. It's very sharp writing.

By the way, while I agree with the rating, in defense of the film itself I would point out that when Tony Stark is in the room, he more or less insists that every conversation is about him.

I disagree with Carl. While he might be right about the subtle meanings behind the conversation, the test isn't about the subtlety. It's about the topic.

The topics are
1)The Ai who runs the house (a man?)
2)The state of Christine's clothes and an offer of a limo
3)Recognising Pepper for who she is
4)Tony Stark

If we have to judge movies on what the characters mean rather than what they say, then the Bechdel test loses all meaning.

It then becomes possible to say that even though two imaginary characters are talking about a woman, they're really jockeying for social status.

And since they're really talking about which of them is better, it's not a conversation about a woman, so it passes....

Let's not add unnecessary complexity to this...

I think the conversation between Pepper and Christine counts. Though they were obviously insulting each other, there's no solid evidence to suggest they were fighting over Tony specifically, and when you take the conversation at face value, Tony is only briefly referenced. I'd say it technically passes all three tests. As for the spirit of female representation, I think Pepper was a great character. It would have been nice if we could have a few girls like her in it, but it's good we had a prominent and competent female.

I definitely agree with the rating. Whether the conversation has layers or not, it's really about Tony Stark.

**4)Tony Stark **

This was all one conversation, therefore it fails part 3.

Kyle disagreed with the rating and said:
The test explicitly states "talk about something other than a man," not "have an entire conversation where a man is not mentioned." Yes, Stark is mentioned in the conversation, but they also talk about Christine's clothes, and the limo, and JARVIS (not a man), and Pepper's status. They talk about several things that are not a man, so even though he is referenced at the end (which, by the way, if he weren't, it wouldn't be a very useful exchange in a movie called IRON MAN), this should still pass all three tests.
