Bowie's character is John Blaylock. While he gets the most tragic storyline to work with, he all but disappears half way in, making room to explore the relationship between Miriam and Sarah. It takes a few conversations before two named women have a conversation that doesn't involve John. I don't think their brief exchange at the bookstore really counts.
