In a formal court hearing, Umbridge accuses Mary of stealing a wand (of not being a witch).

hermione and bellatrix, when bellatrix is torturing hermione - they talk about a wand. most of the time this is happening the camera is on harry and the others in the basement though.
I thought it was pretty disappointing that this movie so barely passed. there are some great female characters in it that just didn't get the screen time that all the male characters did!

Well it is called Harry Potter, amelia. And the books were written by a female.

@Kirk: A book can have strong female characters even if it's focussed on a male and the Harry Potter series does. However, I think JKR could've handled the female characters a little better than she did and, even if others disagree with me on that point, the fact that a woman wrote Harry Potter proves nothing. Women aren't feminist by virtue of their gender and they're just as capable of misogyny as men because everyone's been raised in a patriarchal context.

I agree that it's sad that this barely scrapes by, but in all fairness, if the whole book were represented in one movie, I am sure it'd do better. The primary problem is that it follows Harry, Ron, and Hermione as they more or less don't talk to anyone else. Once they pick up Luna, and once they get to Hogwarts with Tonks and Ginny and Mrs. Weasley and when the Professors (McGonagall and Sprout) start strategizing, things should improve. If they don't then we've got a problem.

I would also say that this is better than most movies (and other media representations of gender relationships) because it demonstrates a clearly platonic, clearly deep and true friendship between a man and a woman.

Dana - I totally agree. One of my favourite things about the Harry Potter series is the relationship between Harry and Hermione. It should also be noted that while romantic relationships do happen, the characters are not preoccupied by those entanglements, and in fact they are hardly discussed at all. Whether or not in this particular film, the female characters are together enough to have a conversation, they are never represented as anything less than fully realized people.

Re: Ali, Kirk and Amelia - no arguments! Just an addition: a common complaint about the HP books and movies is that ALL characters outside the Trio tend to get a bit neglected/glossed over. ;-) It's Harry/Hermione/Ron-centric to the point of eclipsing, sometimes infuriatingly so, dozens of others fantastic characters, female AND male, who deserve more agency and interest themselves. But can't argue that that's rather the point.

You would find both the books and the movie's had plenty of female to female conversations. It only veered slightly towards a sexual subject at about book and movie 5. This is the only occasion in the whole series that could be classed as borderline, and that has more to do with the plot de voiding the main female lead of any feminine companionship. What little time 2 females communicated, Sexual matters was the least of their concern.

Simone Bosco disagreed with the rating and said:
In the news just a day or two ago, they were talking about the Bechdel rating. It was all over the news, and all of the Harry Potter movies don't make the cut. They are chauvanistic and all male oriented.

This movie passes better than some of the other Harry Potter movies. But yeah, it is kinda disappointing.
