In the intro Elina and her friend Dandelion are playing around in the meadow, flying. Elina talks to Dandelion about how great flying feels and that she can't believe she has wings. We do then realize this movie is about saving a prince. The prince is the damsel though.
The main theme is the bonding between Nori, a mermaid, and Elina. When not talkiing about how to find Nalu, Elina and Nori talk about how to get merfairies to listen, they race, where to find Delphine the oracle, the meaning of magic berries, and how to get through fire geysers. Elina trades her wings for a mermaid tail to save Nori's life when she gets trapped.
One of the best conversations is when Elina is stuck a mermaid and has to eat a true self berry, she's worried she wasn't meant to have wings and that her true self might not have them. Nori says, "Would that be so horrible? You’d be you, smart and brave and everything that makes you special." I love this part. Unfortunately later Elina helps Nori admit her feelings to Nalu. The whole fandom feels like they were lesbians flirting the whole time though lol
