As much as I adore this film, does it truly pass? man of any age & discussed in any context, romantic or otherwise. Of the six named female characters, Scout is the only to have meaningful verbal interaction with another. And when she does, the conversation is in regards to either Atticus, Boo, Jem, or Walter Cunningham.

At one point, Scout, Maudie, and Calpurnia talk about Scout's new dress. Atticus and Jem are on the outskirts of the conversation, but don't contribute much to it.

Also, right after this, Miss Caroline and Scout talk about the students in their class (who are of course of mixed gender).

Its racially progressive but not sexually progressive. And the movie was less about pushing an agenda and more about the drama. So given it was made in 1962 and technically passes the B-test I'd say its fine. You'd have to wait many years and dig into small independent films to find something better.

Scout Finch talks to Mrs. DuBose. Scout tells her "Hey, Mrs. DuBose." Mrs. DuBose berates her for saying "Hey" to her, calls her ugly, tells her not to walk away while she's talking to her.

Scout, Miss Maudie, and Calpurnia talk about the dress Scout has to wear to school.
