The main character is a woman, and her love interest (Jess) is another woman. Quite a few of their conversations center around Mary's desire to find a man she doesn't care about, only so she can take him as a "Plus One" to her best friend Charlene's wedding. However, they have multiple conversations that do not mention men. They have a conversation about Jess practicing with her band; about Mary giving a speech at Charlene's wedding; and about Mary revealing that she spent time in prison for injuring another girl during a fight. Another conversation that easily passes the test is the one where Mary and Jess profess their feelings for each other.
Mary also has multiple conversations with Charlene that do not involve men. The vast majority of their conversations are about Mary's search for a "Plus One" and the different men Mary tries to convince Charlene she likes, but they have one confrontation where Charlene reveals how much she and Mary's mother sacrificed while Mary was in prison, as well as one about making up for lost time after Charlene's honeymoon.
