Bechdel Test Movie List

Penny Benjamin and her teenage daughter Amelia talk about Penny's on-and-off boyfriend Maverick. There might be a line here and there that isn't about Maverick, but it's only as a plot point for Penny and Maverick to go on some form of a date. Otherwise, there are no adult women who talk to each other in this film, just the mom to the daughter.

Although this movie is extremely male driven, Penny and Amelia talk about homework and their boat. It feels very much like an exchange added specifically so no one can say the film doesn't pass the Bechdel test.

The rating is flat out wrong. Penny and her daughter Amelia talk about a number of things. Yes, Maverick and Penny’s failed relationships are among them. But homework and sailing are discussed as well.

Not to say this is somehow a feminist-inspired masterpiece, but if you going to have a rating system filled with iron clad technicalities, you should adhere to them.

I wonder why it's a male-driven film? It's not like it depicts an industry in which 99.1% are male. (I mean fighter pilots, not the USAF) And the movie's plot has virtually nothing to do with Penny or Amelia? IDK I only just discovered what this Bechdel Test shite is! Do tell me if I'm wrong

I've updated the rating from 2/3 to 3/3.

Passes 3/3. Penny and Amelia have several discussions about homework, their boat, and what to eat after Amelia's sleepover is cancelled due to a friend's illness.

The sleepover conversation is easily missed because Penny is frantically getting a half naked Maverick out of the house while carrying on an unrelated conversation with Amelia.

While it is male driven given it’s a sequel to a classic, the female characters got a decent amount of story as well.

To the poster above citing 99.1% in the "USAF"... did you watch EITHER Top Gun movie? These are Navy pilots.

An additional note of interest is that all of Penny and her daughter's conversations take place in the presence of Maverick. It's impossible to consider their conversations without a male focus.

1. It needs two woman in it. This is not the situation, its a girl (daughter) and a woman (mother) FAIL
