There are more named female characters in this movie than there have been in the past, but most to serve as a love interest to one of the three main characters. Furthermore, any conversation that Peaches and Ellie have on screen is either about Manny or a boy in Peaches' life. The rest of the female characters that participate in conversation are unnamed. It is nice to see Ellie take on a leadership role and lead the animals to safety for most of the movie, but it is not enough when her and her daughter cannot have a genuine conversation about anything other than men.
