The film follows the life of a female Pope named Johanna, and is narrated by Bishop Arnalda, another woman. As Johanna disguises herself as a man and is around male clergymen and monks, her interactions with other women are sparse but not impossible. She talks to her mother Gudrun, Countess Richild, as well as tutoring Arnalda in religious and non-religious matters.
