Although the two main conversants in this film are two adult women, played by Nicole Kidman and Fionnula Flanagan, there is also a fabulous role played by a young gal, Alakina Mann.
The conversations are heavily laced with Catholic teaching and so forth, but the daughter, Anne, shows some spunk and questions "Mummy's" dogmatic approach.
The movie is set at the end of WWII, so the female characters' social roles are well-established and'traditional'.
However, the main drama/tension in the film is between the mother and daughter and the mother and the housekeeper.
The males in this film are peripheral.
