Megan Leavy is the true story of Marine Cpl Leavy and her bomb sniffing dog Rex. The film focuses on her psychology before enlisting, her training and becoming a dog handler, their service together in Iraq, her struggle with PTSD after returning home and her fight to adopt Rex. She and her mother, Jackie Leavy, are the only two named female characters, apart from two other marines that get brief screen time, and an unnamed veterinarian that serves as an antagonist. Megan and her mother speak several times throughout the story regarding her life choices, the Marines, Rex and her father (although the divorce of her parents is a cloud hanging over each exchange). Some of these encounters are too brief to call conversations.

Although her challenges as a female marine is one of the movie's undertones, it is rarely explicitly stated as such. I found this to be effective use of the "show, don't tell" principal of storytelling.
